ALTHUSSER THROUGH HOBSBAWM'S PEN: WESTERN MARXISM, THEORETICISM AND EDUCATION

Abstract

This article examines Eric Hobsbawm's reading of Louis Althusser in How to Change the World (2011), situating this analysis within the broader framework of Western Marxism and its repercussions in the field of education. The central methodological procedure adopted is the Benjaminian "reading against the grain" (Lesen gegen den Strich), grounded in historical-dialectical materialism. The guiding research problem may be formulated as follows: to what extent does Hobsbawm's critique of Althusserian theoreticism illuminate both the limits and the productivity of Althusser's analytical tools for understanding contemporary education? The article reconstructs Hobsbawm's historiographical trajectory, analyses convergences and divergences with Althusserian philosophy — particularly regarding the epistemological break, the notion of theoretical practice, and the blockage of Gramscian reception in Latin America.

John Weyne Maia Vasconcelos é mestre em Educação Brasileira pela Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), na linha de pesquisa Trabalho e Educação. Desenvolve estudos sobre mercantilização da educação, hegemonia burguesa, políticas educacionais e pensamento marxista, com ênfase nas contribuições de Gramsci, Althusser e na Pedagogia Histórico-Crítica.
